Health Checks (NHS and Over 75s)

The Pall Mall Surgery offers the following Health checks:

• Over 75s – if you have attained the age of 75 years; and have not participated in a consultation within the of twelve month period prior to the date of the request.

• NHS Health Checks – a health check-up for adults in England aged 40 to 74 (Link)

The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health. It can tell you whether you’re at higher risk of getting certain health problems, such as:

• heart disease

• diabetes

• kidney disease

• stroke

During the check-up you’ll also discuss how to reduce your risk of these conditions and dementia.

If you’re over 65, you will also be told the signs and symptoms of dementia to look out for.

Practice Nurses

In a number of cases it might be worth considering an appointment with a practice nurse rather than a doctor. Practice nurses are qualified to deal with many ailments and you may be seen more quickly.

Appointment Cancellations

If you cannot attend an appointment for any reason please inform us as soon as possible in order for us to give the slot to someone else. You can cancel by phone (option 1, this is a 24hr cancellation line), in person at reception, by email to pallmallcancellations@nhs.net or text to 07814 056962.  If you booked online then please remember you can also cancel online if no longer required.

 

Home Visits

Home Visits are for housebound patients only.  Requests for visits should be made before 10:30am on 01702 482900, the doctor on duty will decide whether you need a visit and the urgency of the request.  You may be visited by any member of the multidisciplinary team as the doctor feels appropriate.  

The doctor can see at least six patients in the surgery in the time taken to do one home visit.  Many conditions require equipment or monitoring which can only be provided at the surgery. 

You can also be visited at home by a community nurse if you are referred by your GP. You should also be visited at home by a health visitor if you have recently had a baby or if you are newly registered with a GP and have a child under five years.

Training Practice

We train future GPs (GP Registrars), medical students, nursing students, practice nurse trainees and physician associates. Each GP Registrar is with us for up to 18 months. 

Some consultations are recorded for training purposes, but only with prior consent from the patient. On occasions medical students also sit in with the doctor during consultations. You will always be asked before your consultation if you are happy for the student to be present.

As a Training Practice we are inspected every 3 years and medical records are inspected for quality not content.  If you have any objections, please let us know and these notes will be withdrawn from inspection.

Sickness Certificates

You do not require a doctor's sickness certificate for any illness lasting seven days or less. Your employer may however require you to complete a self-certification form (SC2) which is available from your employer or on the HMRC website.

Evidence that you are sick

If you are sick for more than seven days, your employer can ask you to give them some form of medical evidence to support payment of SSP (statutory sick pay).

It is up to your employer to decide whether you are incapable of work. A medical certificate, now called a 'Statement of Fitness for Work’ (see below) from your doctor is strong evidence that you are sick and would normally be accepted, unless there is evidence to prove otherwise.

You could also provide evidence from someone who is not a medical practitioner, e.g. a dentist. Your employer will decide whether or not this evidence is acceptable. If your employer has any doubts, they may still ask for a medical certificate from your GP.

Statement of Fitness for Work - ’Fit Note'

The 'fit note' was introduced on 6 April 2010. With your employer's support, the note will help you return to work sooner by providing more information about the effects of your illness or injury.
